Urgent Prescription Request Policy

Due to the increasing numbers of patients requesting their prescription on an urgent basis, the practice has needed to instate an Urgent Prescription Policy. Unless a medication is clinically urgent, requests will be processed  routinely (ie they may take up to three full working days).

In order to enable the work of urgent prescription requests to be managed in a safe and effective manner by our clinical pharmacy team, urgent prescriptions may be generated as a paper prescription which will need to be collected from the reception desk after 5pm.

The following medication may be issued on an urgent same-day basis:

  • Inhalers and Montelukast
  • Medication for epilepsy
  • Warfarin, Apixaban and other anticoagulants
  • Medication for palliative patients
  • Digoxin and beta blockers.
  • Anti-psychotics
  • Adrenaline autoinjectors
  • Insulin and Gliclazide
  • Glyceryl Trinitrate spray
  • Prednisolone, Hydrocortisone and Dexamethasone

Hospital Treatment Advice Notes will be processed within three working days of receipt as urgently needed medication will be provided by the treating hospital.
